We are still at Findlay market on Saturdays and Northside on Wednesdays. If you don't see us in the market shed on Saturday, check inside the market house. We've been setting up around the lobster tank.

We still have Gold Rush, Black Twig, Fuji, and Braeburn varieties. This spring we will be planting 30 new Asian pear trees, 30 new peach trees, and 20 Stanley plums, so in the next couple years we'll have more variety.

Winter Apples

We still have Black Twig and Gold Rush, our best keeping varieties. We also have Ida Red, a large pink apple great for eating and baking, as well as Melrose, a crisp eating variety. Yellow New Town Pippin is another type we have currently, and it's a great all purpose apple. We're still making apple butter too. We'll be at Findlay Market on Saturdays for another three or four weeks, until it gets too cold for apple to be outside. We'll be at Northside on Wednesdays in the Presbyterian church for much longer. We're also still attending Madeira from 4-6 on Thursdays in the church on Miami.

Backyard Orchards is at the following winter markets: Wednesdays at Northside in the Presbyterian church on Hamilton; Madeira on Thursdays in the Presbyterian church on Miami; Anderson and Findlay on Saturday; and Hyde Park on Sunday. You can also purchase our apples at Turner Farms.

Late Fall Apples

These are our late fall varieties:

Black Twig - Heirloom type of Winesap, excellent keeper, distinct tart flavor, firm flesh.

Chesapeake - Red Delicious and Rome cross, sweet, crisp, good for eating and baking.

Stayman Winesap - Sweet-tart, firm, good all around apple.

Arkansas Black - Very similar to Black Twig.

We still have Enterprise and Gold Rush for sale.

New Apples

We're picking Goldrush now, a sweet-tart long-lasting cross between Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. Enterprise is also being harvested, a Mac and York mix. Apple Season

We're in the middle of apple season and yes, it hasn't been a usual year. The hot summer has made many varieties ripen early and we're already spot picking Enterprise, one of our main fall apples. Here's what we're getting into: Mutsu - a sweet, juicy cross of Golden Delicious and Indo, a Japanese apple. Very large and green. Liberty - A Macoun cross, hard and sweet-tart. Ruby-Jon (a Jonathan sweet-tart apple), Courtland (a great baking variety) and Northern Spy are also coming in.

This week will probably be the last of our peaches, depending how many we sell. So we're transitioning to apples and pears, so here's what we have currently: Liberty, a sweet-tart variety; Macintosh, also sweet-tart; the famous Honey Crisp, which is on its way out; Ginger Gold, a Grimes Golden type apple, also almost out of season. Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Empire, Johnathon, and Jona-Gold are some of our upcoming varieties. Korean Giant pears will be ripe toward the end of September.

Update On What's In Season

We should have various varieties of yellow and white peaches throughout the month of August. Dayton and Ginger Gold apples are now ripe, and both types are sweet in flavor. Coming up in a couple weeks are Honeycrisp, Gala, and Priscilla apples, all of which are some of the best tasting varieties. We should also have Asian Pears at the market this week.

Just an update on what we're carrying and what markets we are visiting. William's Pride and Red Free varieties are in season, and both are tasty sweet-tart eating apples. We also have Garnet Beauty peaches and apple butter.

This week we operated with limited manpower, but next week we should be able to attend all the following markets: Northside on Wednesday, Madeira on Thursday, Anderson and Findlay on Saturday, and Hyde Park on Sunday.

Markets This Weekend

We will be at the Bellevue Farmers' Market this Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm and Hyde Park this Sunday. The Bellevue Market is located in the parking lot of the Party Source over in Covington, here's a link to their facebook - http://www.facebook.com/bellevue.farmers.market. We will have Pristine Yellow Transparent apples (good for eating and cooking) and Dutchess of Oldenburg, an antique cooking variety. At Hyde Park we will have apple butter as well.

Peaches Coming

We'll probably debut at Northside the second week of July. The peach crop is looking good, but it's still not ready. Dutchess of Oldenburg and Pristine will be our first apple varieties. We'll keep everyone informed!

Apples, peaches and pears

Everything's coming along great this year, it looks as though we'll have a great crop. We won't be at markets till July. We'll have the first peaches and pristine apples, a yellow sweet-tart variety.

Here are the markets that Backyard Orchards will be at this year: Tuesday at Wyoming, Wednesday at Northside and Bellevue, Thursday at Madiera, Saturday at Findlay, Bellevue and possibly Anderson, and Saturday at Hyde Park. This is a pretty busy list and of course subject to change, but we will see how we do.

In May we will be at Hyde Park on Sundays selling apple butter and apple sauce, so come by and say hello.

I thought I'd upload a few pictures of the peach and pear trees coming into bloom. My focus was set to distant, unfortunately, but you can see how pretty bloom is.

Findlay Market

We will be at Findlay Market now while the weather is above freezing. We will be selling Braeburn, Black Twig, Gold Rush, Enterprise and apple butter and apple sauce. Come visit us on a Saturday!

Backyard Orchards at Northside's Winter Market

We are still selling apples at Northside's winter market. It is located in the Presbyterian church off of Hamilton avenue, near the intersection of Chase street. We have plenty of black twig apples, as well as gold rush and enterprise. Apple butter and apple sauce are also available.

We are just about to start pruning. Hopefully we'll have a great crop this year. We will also update this blog more frequently to inform you of what exactly we will be bringing to market.

Peaches and Summer Apples available

Here's a list of what we're bringing to market right now:

Jersey Dawn yellow semi-cling peaches - Great for eating, very sweet flavor.

William's Pride Apples - An early summer variety with a nice sweet-tart taste. Excellent for eating and pies.

Red Free - Another one of our early ripening disease-resistant varieties, this apple also has a sweet-tart flavor.

Ginger Gold - A sweet, yellow apple good for baking and eating.

Coming soon - Dayton, a good eating red apple.
